Bikebox
About the Project
Bikebox is an advanced management platform developed for robotic bicycle parking facilities operated at Israel Railways stations. The system enables transportation teams to manage automated bicycle storage locations from one centralized web application, while providing commuters with a fast, secure and convenient parking experience.
The platform supports the complete operational lifecycle of each bicycle parking facility, including user access, parking reservations, available-space allocation, bicycle deposit and retrieval processes, occupancy monitoring, payments, incident management and operational reporting.
By connecting the digital management platform directly with the robotic parking infrastructure, Bikebox transforms a complex hardware-based operation into a clear, measurable and highly automated service.
Challenges
The project required the development of a reliable management system capable of operating across multiple railway stations and coordinating large numbers of users, parking spaces and automated mechanical processes in real time.
Each parking facility needed to maintain accurate information about available spaces, active reservations, stored bicycles, access permissions and robotic system status. Any delay or inconsistency between the software and the physical parking equipment could affect the commuter experience and create operational bottlenecks.
Additional challenges included managing peak-hour demand, preventing conflicting reservations, protecting user and payment information, handling hardware alerts, maintaining full activity logs and giving administrators immediate visibility into every facility.
The solution also had to be intuitive enough for daily operational teams while remaining technically robust, scalable and flexible enough to support additional stations and parking units in the future.
Our Solution
We designed and developed a centralized web application that connects operational management, customer activity and robotic parking controls within a single secure platform.
The system includes a real-time management dashboard that displays parking occupancy, available spaces, active reservations, bicycle status, system alerts and station activity. Administrators can quickly identify unusual events, review operational performance and respond to technical issues before they affect additional users.
A smart allocation engine manages reserved and available parking spaces, helping prevent duplicate assignments and ensuring that each user is directed to an appropriate storage position. Reservation and occupancy data are synchronized with the robotic system to support smooth bicycle deposit and retrieval processes.
The application also includes secure user access management, payment processing capabilities, permission-based administration, complete activity histories and detailed reporting tools. These features allow Israel Railways teams to monitor usage patterns, evaluate station performance and make data-driven decisions regarding capacity and future expansion.
To support reliable operation, the platform was fully integrated with the robotic hardware controllers. This integration enables the application to send commands, receive equipment status updates, identify failures and coordinate physical bicycle movements from within the management interface.
Results
The completed platform provides Israel Railways with full operational visibility and centralized control over its robotic bicycle parking facilities. Teams can monitor activity across stations, manage reservations and capacity, review alerts and control robotic processes without relying on disconnected systems or manual reporting.
Automated space allocation and real-time synchronization have significantly reduced operational errors and shortened the time required for users to deposit or retrieve bicycles. The streamlined workflow supports a faster and more predictable commuter experience, especially during busy travel periods.
The system has also improved maintenance and support processes by providing clear alerts, detailed event histories and immediate access to equipment status information. Operational teams can identify the source of a problem more quickly and respond with accurate, relevant data.
With its scalable architecture, the Bikebox platform can support additional railway stations, parking facilities and robotic units as the service expands. The result is a secure, efficient and future-ready smart mobility solution that encourages bicycle use as part of the public transportation journey.
